1
Examine the warning labels on the backs of any disinfectants you're thinking about using. Some are more toxic to kids and pets than others and if you have either in the home, you'll want to avoid the more toxic varieties.
-
2
Read the directions regarding what surfaces the disinfectant works best on. If a cleaner works best on smooth, non-porous surfaces and you need something for a rough-textured counter top, you would want to go with something else.

3
Consider the scents that are added to many disinfectants. If the odor will be unpleasant, you won't want to use it unless it is in a very well-ventilated area.
-
4
Decide on if you want a "green" disinfectant, which is a cleaner that is deemed healthy or non-toxic for the environment. Green cleaners and disinfectants frequently cost more but the environmental benefit is worth it to many consumers.
-
5
Test the disinfectant in your home and see if it is an effective cleaner for you. If you are not happy with it, switch to another brand.
