How to Format a Garmin SD Card

Garmin GPS units use either standard or micro SD cards.

Secure Digital (SD) cards hold large amounts of data on a compact card. They can be used in digital cameras, digital camcorders and Garmin GPS systems. Format an SD card to work in a Garmin GPS system by using your computer's built-in formatting tool. This tool will wipe the card clean, making it ready to be placed in a Garmin GPS system.

Things You'll Need

• microSD card converter (optional)

Instructions

1. Insert the microSD card into an SD card converter, if your Garmin unit uses a microSD.

2. Insert the SD card into an SD slot, or plug in the converter.

3. Click on the "Start" menu, then on "My Computer."

4. Find the SD drive. Right-click on it, then click on "Format."

5. Change the file system to "FAT16" in the drop-down menu. This system is the most common format for SD cards.

6. Press "Format" and the process will begin. Remove the card once the format is complete.

Tips & Warnings

• Use an portable SD card reader that connects into a USB port if your computer does not have a SD reader.

• Some digital cameras cannot read SD cards formatted in systems other than FAT16.
