How to Implement Email Security
Email security is one way of protecting your computer from viruses, spam, and scammers. In order to make sure you can continue to send and receive messages, and to store information on your computer and know it is secure, implement email security within your email program and within your computer at the same time.

1
Go into your email account and access your security settings. Set each at the highest level of security. Areas to focus on are junk mail control, virus protection, and email receipts. If you set all of these within your email account to the highest security possible, you'll reduce the chance for problems to arise.

2
Click on your personal security settings for your computer. These are found in the Control Panel of your operating system. Open the dialogue box that lists the variety of security settings--from scanning all emails to using a firewall to protect your computer. Click through the various settings, which vary by operating system. Select the highest level of security for each of the settings. Sometimes, there are "security" tabs that allow you to choose low, medium, or high levels of security without choosing individual elements. If you are given that choice, choose the highest level of security.

Contact your Internet service provider to confirm your email security settings that differ from the settings on your individual email or computer. These will include firewall protection, email scanners, and junk email folders. Make sure that the ISP tells you your email security settings are at their highest possible level.
