How to Calculate Canadian Postage

How to Calculate Canadian Postage thumbnail
Calculating Canadian postage is simple.

The mail service in Canada is managed by Canada Post. In addition to offering mailing and shipping services, Canada Post offers collector gifts and coins, commemorative stamps and shipping supplies such as boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. As of 2010, the Canada Post rate (in Canadian currency) to send a regular letter within Canada is CA$0.57, CA$1 to the U.S. and CA$1.70 to international destinations outside of the U.S.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and weigh your item. The most important determinants of your postage are the dimensions and weight of your item. Measure the length, width, height and weight of your item and write down the dimensions and weight before you start to calculate your postage.

    • 2

Go to the Canada Post website (see Resource).

    • 3

Click on "Find a Rate." This interactive tool allows you to fill in details about your letter or parcel and tells you what the postage cost will be.

    • 4

Choose if your item is a letter or a parcel. A letter has a maximum length of 14.96 inches, maximum width of 10.63 inches, maximum height of 0.78 inches and a maximum weight of 1.1 pounds. Anything larger than this is considered a parcel. Also, items containing anything of monetary value are considered parcels, regardless of the size.

    • 5

Choose your general destination. You must choose whether your item is going to Canada, the U.S. or some international destination.

    • 6

Choose the specific destination. You must fill in the destination postal code for Canada, the destination state for the U.S. and the destination country for international mailing.

    • 7

Fill in the dimensions of your item. If you are sending a letter, you need to choose whether it is a regular or a large envelope and choose a weight range. If you are sending a parcel, you must fill in the exact length, width, height and weight of your parcel.

    • 8

Choose your delivery service. You can pay more to get faster shipping services, registered services or other services that offer features such as delivery confirmation. Some services guarantee next-day delivery within Canada or the U.S. Once you have chosen your delivery service, the Find a Rate tool will display the cost of your postage in Canadian dollars.
