How to Draw a Perspective Grid
Adding perspective to your drawings can transform a flat, 2D picture into a picture that has more depth and dimension. One of the first lessons in adding perspective into a drawing is to begin by drawing a perspective grid. The perspective grid will help you to see how to add elements into a drawing, such as rocks or cars, in a way that will make them appear to be going off into the distance.

1
Place a sheet of paper horizontally onto a table.
-
2
Place a ruler horizontally in the middle of the sheet of paper.
-
-
3
Draw along the length of the ruler with a pencil. This will be the horizon line.
-
4
Place the ruler vertically in the middle of the sheet of paper.
-
5
Locate where the ruler intersects the horizon line, and place a dot on that point. Draw a line from the dot down to the bottom of the page.
-
6
Place the ruler so that it connects the dot and the bottom, left-hand corner of the paper.
-
7
Draw along the length of the ruler to create a diagonal line between the dot and the bottom, left-hand corner.
-
8
Place the ruler onto the paper connecting the dot and the bottom, right-hand corner of the paper.
-
9
Draw along the length of the ruler creating a line connecting the dot and the bottom, right-hand corner.
-
10
Place the ruler horizontally 1/2 inch below the horizon line. Draw along the length of the ruler.
-
11
Place the ruler horizontally 1 inch below the line you just drew and draw along the length of the ruler.
-
12
Place the ruler horizontally 2 inches below the line you just drew, and draw a line along the length of the ruler. This will effectively complete the perspective grid. The spaces near the horizon line will be smaller than the grid spaces near the bottom of the page. When you draw objects near the horizon line, you will draw them smaller than if you were to draw them near the bottom of the page. This will give the illusion of depth to your drawing.
