Word 2007 changes quotations from straight quotes to smart quotes, but you can change this setting.

If the quotation marks appear to be changing in Word, they may be set to automatically format. By default, Word 2007 changes quotations from straight quotes to smart quotes, but you can change this setting. The AutoFormat feature handles the formatting on your page automatically. AutoFormat gives you two options when you change formatting. You can replace the formatting of your text or apply the formatting after you type each word.

      Open a new or existing Word document.

      Select the Microsoft Office Button and choose "Word Options."

      Select the "Proofing" category in the "Word Options" window, then click the "AutoCorrect Options" button.

      Select the "AutoFormat" tab in the "AutoCorrect" dialog box.

      Go to the "Replace" section. To replace straight quotes with smart quotes, check that option. To leave your quotations unformatted, leave the option unchecked.

      Select the "AutoFormat as you Type" tab and go to the "Replace as you type" section.

      Add or remove the check mark by '"Straight quotes" with "smart quotes." Then click "OK" twice to return to your document.
