Instructions

    • 1

Install the router in an elevated position, such as on top of a book case or cabinet. Placing the router in a higher place will increase the signal range, so you will be able to use the internet further away from the router. Arrange the antenna or antennas in a fully upright position.

    • 2

Connect the internet connection in your home at your Internet modem to the Internet port on the back of the router with an Ethernet cable. This port is usually separated from the rest of the ports to make it easier to find.

    • 3

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the remaining ports on the back of the router to a wired network adapter on your computer. Open your web browser and type in the default IP address for the router, found in the router documentation.

    • 4

Enter the default username and password for the router when prompted and click "OK." Follow the steps in the automatic configuration wizard. You will need to know if a username and password is required for your connection, which can be obtained from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    • 5

Open the wireless settings configuration area. Make sure that the wireless radio is enabled. Set the Wireless network name (SSID) to a name that you will remember.

    • 6

Set the security options or encryption to "WPA2" if the option is available and enter a pass phrase. If "WPA2" is not available, use "WPA." These options make it more difficult for people to take control of your router without your permission. Write down the network name and pass phrase.

    • 7

Set the password to access the router configuration page to a new password. This should include letters and numbers. Make a note of this password for making changes later.

    • 8

Enter the wireless network settings on each computer that will be in your network. Click on the wireless network icon in the bottom right of the taskbar. Click on the network name you set and then enter the pass phrase. After completing this step on each computer, they should all be able to connect to the internet when they are in range of the router.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your wireless internet connection cuts in and out, change the broadcast channel for the wireless router in its configuration page until this problem stops. Interference can occur from microwaves, telephones and other electronics.
