Unseal an envelope neatly.

Envelopes seal with a glue that is activated when it is dampened. If you forget something or mixed your insertions up, it's easy to unglue any envelope so that it's still usable.

Things You'll Need

  • Freezer
  • Knife
  • Pot
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Freezer

    • 1

      Place a sealed envelope into the freezer for two to three hours.

    • 2

      Run the blade of a sharp knife gently under the flap of the envelope.

      Open the envelope gently.

    Microwave

    • 4

      Place the envelope in a microwave.

    • 5

      Turn the microwave on for 20 seconds.

    • 6

      Remove the envelope from the microwave and the flap will open when nudged.

    Steam

    • 7

      Pour several inches of water into a large pot and place it on high heat.

    • 8

      Wait until the water is at a rolling boil.

    • 9

      Hold the envelope over the steam until the glue softens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Both of these methods will also work to unseal new envelopes that have become glued due to heat or water exposure.

  • Steam from boiling water is very hot so exercise caution. A safer method is to place a strainer in the pot and place the envelope flap down in the strainer for 30 seconds.
