DIY Shadow Box Framing
Shadow boxes allow you display three-dimensional items that aren't suitable for most other types of frames. Although shadow boxes are available at many framing stores, you are limited to the sizes and designs available. Creating your own shadow box in the exact dimensions to best showcase your item is both inexpensive and allows you complete control over the finished look. The size of the shadow box is determined by the size of the frames that you use, though one of the frames must have a flat front to which to attach the box.
Instructions

1
Measure the length and width of the picture frame opening. Add ½ inch onto each measurement. For example, a 5-by-7-inch frame gives you a measurement of 5.5-by-7.5 inches.
-
2
Cut a 1-by-2-inch board to the measurements indicated by your frame with a hand or power saw. Cut two length pieces and two width pieces from the lumber.
-
-
3
Stand the wood pieces on their sides and arrange them into a box. Glue the corners together with wood glue, and allow the glue to dry.
-
4
Remove the glass and cardboard from the backing of the frame frame, then lay the frame face up on your work surface. Place the wood box on top the frame and glue it into place with the wood glue. Allow the glue to dry.
-
5
Run a bead of glue on the top edge of the box. Remove the cardboard backing from the second frame, but leave the glass in. Set the second frame on top of the box, face up, and press it into place. Allow the glue to dry.
-
6
Place your items inside the shadow box, and arrange them as desired. Hold the items in place with double-sided tape, if necessary. Replace the glass and backing in the back frame before hanging or displaying.

Tips & Warnings
Place a sheet of decorative paper or theme-appropriate photograph in the back frame to provide a background to your shadow box.
The back and front frames do not have to match in design as long as they have the same dimensions.
If you are displaying heavy items, you may need to further secure the wooden frame with finishing nails to ensure it can hold the weight.
