If you plan to install your own above ground pool, you will need to enlist the help of a friend or family member. Before beginning, read the manufacturer's instructions thoroughly. Preparing the Ground
-
1
Measure the area where the pool will sit. If your pool is 24 feet around, measure the area accordingly. Add a few inches beyond the perimeter.
-
2
Level the ground and excavate the sod. Use a string line to check the level. Drive wooden stakes about 12-inches above the ground one on each side of the area. Tie the string on to the stakes and place the level in the center of the string. At various places along the string measure from the string vertically to the ground at various intervals. If the ground is level, each measurement should be about the same.

3
Position patio stones where the pool's frame posts will sit. Dig an area the size of the blocks where the sides are underground. Make sure the stones are level.
-
4
Place a 2-inch layer of sand across the pool area, rake level and tamp down firmly.
Assemble the Pool
-
5
Assemble the pool tracks according to manufacturer's directions. Unwind the pool wall, inserting the bottom into the tracks. Connect the wall with bolts and nuts that come with the pool. When the bolts are in place cover the bolt heads with one long strip of duct tape.
-
6
Build a beveled wall around the inside bottom of the pool walls with sand. The wall should be about 6 inches tall at a 45-degree angle. You can buy preformed foam made for this purpose instead of forming the cove with sand.
-
7
Install the pool liner. Unfold the liner from the center of the pool. Distribute the liner evenly around the inside of the pool walls. Pull the liner edges up, overlapping the top wall edges about 6 inches, applying the coping to keep in place. Beaded liners fit differently. Use the manufacturer's guide as a reference.
-
8
Assemble the pool posts. Attach the posts according to the manufacturer's directions. Place the rails evenly on the stone blocks positioned in Step 3 of the first section.
-
9
Fill the pool with water slowly. Adjust the pool liner as necessary so the weight of the water does not exert too much pressure down on the liner's edges. When the pool is finished filling attach the top rails.
