How to Build Your Greenhouse for Maximum Plant Growth

How to Build Your Greenhouse for Maximum Plant Growth thumbnail
Plan your greenhouse for the right location with plenty of sunlight.

Greenhouses provide the right environment year around for the plants you have chosen to grow. Building a greenhouse in a specific manner could bring the maximum amount of plant growth regardless of the season or when inclement weather arrives. In building a greenhouse, there are a number of things to consider, such as the money required to build, the location of the greenhouse, materials used, and the size and function of your greenhouse. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how much money you are willing to put into your greenhouse. Some greenhouses are made of materials that are expensive to construct and ship. Your budget will determine what kind of greenhouse you can build and the size of the greenhouse.

    • 2

Find a location with plenty of sunlight. This is especially important during the winter months when plant growth is slower due to reduced daily sunlight. Also take into consideration the area where you live when building your greenhouse. Alaska, for example, is known for having summer months where the sun shines brightly even at midnight.

    • 3

Design your greenhouse so the plants that require the most sunlight are on the east side to catch the rising sun and winter sun. Greenhouse roofs and walls are generally made of either glass or plastic, so install fans around the exterior of the room. This method will allow air to circulate without causing the plants to become cold and will also provide a modicum of comfort for yourself while inside tending to your plant life.

    • 4

Install the other necessary requirements to assure maximum plant growth, such as air misters in the ceiling of the greenhouse, grow lights, and an irrigation system for water and heat. Your greenhouse must also have a good drainage system to drain excess water away from the floors or mildew will set in. Electricity is also required if the greenhouse will use lights after nightfall.

    • 5

Plant your vegetables, flowers, fruits and herbs in store-bought soil in trays placed in your greenhouse. When you notice the seeds emerging, add fertilizer and move the plants to pots in your greenhouse. Make sure you sanitize the greenhouse on a regular basis to help with the appearance of the greenhouse and assist in the continued growth and beauty of your plants.
