How to Turn the Cable DSL Modem Off & Back On thumbnail
Turning a cable modem off and on resets the settings to establish a fresh connection to the Internet.

Sometimes your cable or DSL modem must be turned off or reset if you are experiencing a slow or no Internet connection. Rebooting your cable or DSL modem will refresh the modem's settings, so that the signal from the Internet provider's central office to your home can be refreshed to continue receiving a high-speed Internet connection. Turning off a modem appears confusing at first, because cable and DSL modems do not have an on/off switch, but it's actually a relatively simple procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the modem from your wall outlet for 60 seconds.

    • 2

Shut down your PC. Shutting down the PC allows the settings in the computer and the modem to update and calibrate.

    • 3

Plug the cable or DSL modem back into the wall outlet, and reboot your computer. When you turn the modem back on, all the lights will come on at one time, and then your power button and Internet connection button will stay illuminated. If you have a router or computer plugged directly into the modem, buttons indicating those connections will also stay illuminated.

    • 4

Restart your computer. Open your browser, and visit a website to verify that you are connected to the Internet.
