How to Add a Google Desktop Gadget

Google Desktop Gadgets are miniature applications that sit on your desktop or in the Google Desktop sidebar. These gadgets come in a variety of categories. If you like entertainment, there are game gadgets that let you play on your desktop. If you need productivity tools, you can install calculators, calendars and a variety of to-do lists. News organizations also create gadgets that keep you updated with breaking news and weather forecasts. To install Google Gadgets, you must first install Google Desktop.

      Visit the "Google Desktop" download page (see "Resources.") Click "Install Google Desktop."

      Read the service agreement and click "Agree and Download." Windows will install the software and display a "Thank You" screen when done. Press "OK" to close the window. The "Google Desktop" sidebar will appear on the right of your screen.

      Click the "+" sign at the top of the sidebar to open the "Add Gadgets" window. You will see categories such as "News," "Tools" and "Communication."

      Click "News." News Gadgets will appear as thumbnails on the right side of the window.

      Explore the various Gadgets that are available. Click the arrow keys at the bottom of the window to scroll through the category of your choice. Hold the mouse over a Gadget to read its description. Enter a search term, such as "books" or "cars," in the "Search" box at the top of the window. Press "Enter." Google Desktop will display Gadgets that match your search term.

      Double-click a Gadget. Windows will install the gadget and open it on your desktop. Click and hold your left mouse button, and drag the Gadget to move it.

      Click the "Arrow" button at the top of the Gadget window. A drop-down window will appear. Click "Dock to Sidebar" to move the gadget to the Google sidebar. It will appear below the other Gadgets at the bottom of the sidebar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Gadgets have an "Options" menu that allows you to configure the Gadget. Click the arrow at the top of the Gadget to access that menu. You can also add Gadgets from the Google Gadget website (see "Resources.")
