How to Change BIOS on Dell 8400

Change BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) options on a Dell Dimension 8400 desktop to further customize your system. Changing BIOS options allows you to choose how your hardware, both internal and external, interacts with your operating system and other hardware. In addition to changing options on a Dell Dimension 8400, view information about installed hardware, such as your processor and memory. Dell 8400 BIOS can also be used to troubleshoot hardware issues, especially after upgrading or changing hardware, such as memory, hard drives and graphics cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Dell Dimension 8400 computer.

    • 2

Press the power button to restart the computer.

    • 3

Press "F2" as soon as the Dell Logo screen appears. This screen only appears for approximately two seconds. Restart again if you miss the screen.

    • 4

Use the left and right arrow keys on your Dell Dimension 8400 keyboard to select different BIOS options pages and to open sub-menus for certain options.

    • 5

Use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate through options on each BIOS menu screen.

    • 6

Press "Enter" to select an option.

    • 7

Use your arrow keys to select a different setting for an option. For instance, if you select to change your boot order, use your up or down arrow keys to move the selected up or down on the boot order list.

    • 8

Press "Enter" to select your desired change. You can then navigate through the BIOS menu screens again. Until you press "Enter" to save a change, you will be limited to a specific option and its settings.

    • 9

Select either "Save/Exit" or "Exit" to exit the BIOS screen. If you did not make any changes, choose "Exit."

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a list of all BIOS changes you make. This allows you to troubleshoot if your system does not work as desired after a BIOS change.

  • Only change BIOS options if absolutely necessary. Making incorrect changes may result in hardware working incorrectly or not at all.
