Building inspectors in Chicago must take a class to become licensed.

In the city of Chicago, you must complete several tasks to become a building inspector. You must graduate high school or an equivalent in the eyes of the state and be at least 21 years of age. You must also go through 60 hours of coursework that allows you to learn what you need to know to do inspections right. Once you have obtained your license, you will need to do periodic coursework to keep current on new regulations.

      Locate an approved school or training company to take your building inspection pre-licensing class work. Two such locations in Chicago include The House Doctors Inspection Training Institute and Domicile Consulting Inc.

      Contact the company that offers the course to find out when they are offering classes. Decide on the time you want to take it and register for the class. Pay the fee to the company for the class. It is costly and can be more than $1,000. The fee for the class is set by each company.

      Take the class. The class lasts for several weeks or weekends depending on the schedule. There are 60 total hours of class time that must be completed. Coursework will cover all things necessary to pass the test including state laws; building science for things like decks, house structure, foundations, insulation and much more; reporting and business operations.

      Receive proof of the class work from your teacher and set up an appointment for your licensing exam. You just have to complete the 60 hours of class work. There is no passing score for the class. In Illinois, you must contact an AMP Assessment Center to set up the exam. The tests are given by computer from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays in certain locations. You may set up the testing by going to the online website and following the online instructions or by calling 800-345-6559. You may also mail the application for exam in to AMP. You can receive a copy of the application from your teacher. There is a $125 fee for the exam (as of 2010).

      Take and pass the exam. In Illinois, the exam centers are typically in H&R Block buildings. You will be notified by mail or phone about your time of exam and location. The test lasts four hours.

      Receive your test results by mail. If you passed, fill out the application for licensure that was sent with your results and send it back in to AMP to obtain your license. There is a fee for the license of $250 (as of 2010).
