How to Convert a MIDI File Into Sheet Music

How to Convert a MIDI File Into Sheet Music thumbnail
Notation software can create sheet music out of MIDI files.

If you're a musician, you probably want to learn how to play many of your favorite songs. This can be difficult to do if you don't have the sheet music available. While you can buy the sheet music for some songs, it's more affordable to write your own with notation software. With this software you can import a musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) file and create accurate sheet music from that. Using this software allows you to create sheet music from songs that don't traditionally have sheet music available.

Instructions

    • 1

Download music notation software. There are several makers of this software, but some popular choices are Notation Player, which is free, and Notation Musician software, which cost $37.99 in July 2010.

    • 2

Download the MIDI file. Save it to a place you can easily retrieve it, such as the desktop.

    • 3

Import the MIDI file into your notation software. The way you do this depends on the software you use, but usually there is an "Open" command in the "File" menu.

    • 4

Run the notation software. After the sheet music is complete, save the file.

    • 5

Print your sheet music. Open the file with your PDF software and select "File" and "Print".

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't sell the sheet music you create with this software unless you have written the MIDI music yourself.
