How to Carve a Woodspirit in a Hiking Stick

How to Carve a Woodspirit in a Hiking Stick thumbnail
Walking sticks often feature carvings at the top.

Wood spirits are often carved into the top portion of the walking stick. These spirits are traditionally rooted in European lore and are said to bring luck to the person who sees one while in the woods. You can carve one into the top of your walking stick for a bit of good luck and a whimsical nod to ancient wood lore. Key features of a wood spirit include hair that resembles foliage, untamed facial hair, large nose, piercing eyes and prominent cheeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 6-inch-long oval on the top end of the maple branch. Select the widest end as the top.

    • 2

Draw in the facial features of the wood spirit. Include hair, eyes, cheek bones, nose, facial hair and mouth.

    • 3

Carve a notch for the eye sockets. Define the shape of the nose from the side profile view. Carve smaller notches for the lips and chin.

    • 4

Cut small chips of wood away from the face to define the nose, mouth, eyes and eyebrows of the wood spirit. Shave small slivers of wood away to create the texture of the hair, beard and wrinkles. Continue to carve out details until you are satisfied with the carving.

    • 5

Apply a wood finish to the carved portion of the walking stick. Allow the finish to dry prior to handling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave the remaining portion of the walking stick natural with bark intact for a natural-feeling walking stick.

  • Wear eye protection when carving wood.

  • Carve in the direction going away from your body.
