How to Make Nursing Tops

- Cotton fabric or cotton T-shirts

Draw a shape of the nursing top on the fabric using a piece of tailor chalk. You will need two shapes, one for the front and one for the back. The shapes you draw will the final design of your top, but leave at least half an inch for the seams. The simplest model of a nursing top is a loose tank top. The main objective is that it has enough space for the breasts and that it’s practical for nursing.

Make sure the fabric is flat and wrinkle-free, lying on an even surface. Cut the shape while following the outline using sharp tailor scissors.

Sew the two sides of the nursing top together, using a sewing machine and turning the fabric itself on the wrong side. Make sure the thread is compatible with the color and pattern of the fabric. Check all the edges of the nursing top and make sure they are all properly closed, meaning folded and stitched.

Try the top on to see exactly where to cut two slits over the upper front side on the nursing top. They need to be just below the breasts, for quick and simple access.

Sew a casing for the drawstring under the breasts by folding the edge of the fabric and sewing it. This part of the nursing top will conceal the slits used for breastfeeding.

Place a drawstring in the casing, using a big plastic knitting needle. Use a soft, pliable and natural piece of string for this part of the job. Note that you will usually make a small bow in the front of the nursery top, just under the breasts, so make sure that it complements the pattern and color of the fabric.
