How to Make Heavy Duty Magnets
A magnet is a metal or mostly metal object that can generate magnetic force fields. These fields cause certain types of metal to be attracted to the magnet. They are therefore often used for lifting heavy objects or for holding machine parts in place.
Things You'll Need
- Propane torch
- Grill
- Metal bar made of nickel, iron, an aluminum-nickel-iron alloy or a neodymium-iron-boron alloy
- Strong neodymium magnet
- Tongs (must be heavy enough to lift the metal bar)
- Leather gloves
- Safety goggles
- 5-gallon bucket of water
- Large stone or concrete working surface

1
Dress in clothing appropriate for working with hot objects and magnetic fields. Wear safety goggles. Make sure that your pant cuffs are set over the tops of your shoes of boots. This will prevent any hot objects you may accidentally drop from getting stuck in your footwear. Wear flame-retardant clothing. Use heavy leather gloves. This is both to prevent burning and to prevent your fingers from being crushed if they get caught between a metal object and the neodymium magnet.

2
Set the grill on a cement or sand surface. This will minimize risk of fire if the grill is accidentally overturned or burning charcoal is dropped. Place the bucket of water nearby in case of fire. It will also rapidly cool hot metal objects in case of emergency.

3
Light the grill with the matches or lighter. Place the metal bar on the grill, using the tongs. Once the charcoal in the grill is all on fire and burning well, turn on the propane torch. Turn the torch's flame on the metal bar for several minutes. Turn off the torch when done.

4
Transfer the metal bar from the grill to the stone or concrete working surface using the tongs. Stroke it with the neodymium magnet. Stroke only in one direction, lifting the magnet well away when it reaches the end of the bar. Continue stroking the bar as it returns to air temperature. Once it cools, the metal bar will be a strong permanent magnet.

Tips & Warnings
Use caution when handling the neodymium magnet. Keep it away from any metal objects. The neodymium magnet is able to exert a hazardous level of force on any metal it comes near.
Follow all recommended safety precautions for the grill and the torch.
Children should not use propane torches, grills or neodymium magnets.
