Back up your Windows XP machine.

Windows XP includes a backup utility that makes it easy to back up your system and personal files. The backup utility allows you to schedule backups, so you just set your backup configurations and let the scheduler run the software each day or week. The backup utility does not require any additional installation of software and it runs at your scheduled intervals as long as the computer remains powered on.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows XP "Start" button. Click "All Programs," then click "Accessories." In the list of accessories, click "System Tools" and then click "Backup." This starts the backup creation wizard.

Select "My Documents and Settings" from the opening window and click "Next." Check the boxes next to each directory and settings folder that you want to back up. After you have made all of your selections, click "Next."

    • 3

Click "Browse." Select a hard drive folder where you store your backup files. Click "OK" to save the hard drive folder settings. This returns you to the main backup wizard window. Click "Next."
