How to Trim Paw Fur

How to Trim Paw Fur thumbnail
It is important to trim away excess hair on a dog's paws.

There are many dog breeds with furry paws, including Golden Retrievers, Border Collies and Cocker Spaniels. While their furry feet are cute, dogs' paws need to be trimmed to prevent matting, collecting dirt and mud between the toes, and picking up irritations such as burrs. If you notice that your pooch's paws are looking hairy, it's probably time for a trim.

Instructions

  1. Paw Grooming

    • 1

Begin by having your dog lay down.

    • 2

Choose a paw to begin with. Grasp the paw in your hand and gently squeeze the center of the paw to separate the toes.

    • 3

Continue to squeeze the paw lightly in the center. Use a scissor to carefully trim away the excess fur on the paw so that the hair does not protrude past the toe pad.

    • 4

Continue the paw grooming session by moving on to the other paws.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your dog is not used to getting his paws trimmed, start by handling his paws gently so that he is not frightened when you begin grooming.

  • If your dog acts scared, talk to him in a soothing voice. It is often easiest to trim a dog's paws when he is tired.

  • Be sure to give your dog lots of praise once the grooming is complete.

  • Be careful not to cut yourself or your dog during the grooming process.
