How to Remove an Icon From the Desktop in GNOME on Linux
GNOME is a free, open-source desktop for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. GNOME is the default desktop in Linux distributions like Fedora and Ubuntu. GNOME provides a desktop environment with familiar software such as windows, a desktop, panels and a file browser. Files or shortcuts to programs appear as icons on the GNOME desktop, which also includes some special icons. Remove normal icons with the right-click menu and remove special icons from the GNOME desktop using the included "Configuration Editor" application.

Remove Normal Icons

View your desktop by clicking the "Show Desktop" icon on the panel in the lower-left corner of your screen.

Right-click an icon on your GNOME desktop.

Click "Move to Trash" in the right-click menu that appears. Files removed from the desktop in this way are deleted unless they are shortcuts. To keep the file but remove its icon from the desktop, click "Places" > "Home Folder", and then drag the icon from the desktop to the "File Browser" window.

Open the "Run Application" dialog by pressing "Alt" + "F2".

Type "gconf-editor" in the "Run Application" box, and then click "Run".

Click the "plus" (+) sign next to "Apps" in the left pane of the "Configuration Editor" window.

Scroll down in the left pane of the "Configuration Editor" window and click the "plus" (+) sign next to "Nautilus".

Click "Desktop" under "Nautilus" in the left pane of the "Configuration Editor" window.

Remove special icons from the desktop by clicking the check-boxes to the right of the options in the right pane of the "Configuration Editor" window if they are enabled. Remove the "Computer" icon by clicking the "computer_icon_visible" check-box, remove the "Home" folder icon by clicking the "home_icon_visible" check-box, remove the "Network" icon by clicking the "network_icon_visible" check-box, remove the "Trash" icon by clicking the "trash_icon_visible" check-box and remove the removable media icons that appear when media are inserted by clicking the "volumes_visible" check-box.

Recover deleted files from GNOME's trash by clicking the "Trash" icon on the panel in the lower-right corner of your screen, right-clicking the file in the "Trash" window and clicking "Restore".
