How to Upgrade My MSN for Free
MSN, also known as MSN Messenger, is Microsoft's instant messaging program. It comes free with the purchase of most computers with Windows-based operating systems, just like Internet Explorer. Microsoft occasionally comes out with a new version of MSN Messenger, and will alert you via pop-up alerts when you open your web browser. If you miss the update or never get around to installing it, you can retrieve the free upgrade from the Microsoft website.

1
Open your computer's Internet browser. Go to the Microsoft download website (see address in the Resources section). There is no need to uninstall your current version of MSN Messenger. The upgrade will not produce a duplicate program.
-
2
Select the "Download Categories" drop box from the upper right corner of the website. Click on the "Internet" link. This will take you to the list of Microsoft's most recent versions of its free programs.

Scroll past the upgrades for Internet Explorer and the Windows Imaging Component. The upgrades are listed by popularity, and the MSN Messenger upgrade was not as popular as those two programs as of 2010. Find the "MSN Messenger" link. As of 2010, it is version 7.0. Select the link.

4
Select the "Download" button from the middle of the page, and wait for the download to complete. When the installation wizard pops up after the download finishes, select "Run" to install the newest version of MSN Messenger.
