How to Replace Lost Chevrolet Keys for 2007 Malibu

How to Replace Lost Chevrolet Keys for 2007 Malibu thumbnail
New cars use transponder keys to start the engine.

Losing the key to your 2009 Chevrolet Malibu is not an insurmountable problem. A basic key cut by the local auto parts or hardware store will not work because new vehicles are equipped with transponder keys. The microchip in the transponder key works with the passlock sensor in the ignition, which sends the security data to the control module. Without that data, the car will not start. Fortunately, you can obtain another key.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle identification number
  • Registration, title or loan paperwork
  • Picture identification

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the car. It is on the strip inside the windshield on the driver's side, inside the driver's door frame, on your title and registration, and usually on your insurance card.

    • 2

Call the local Chevrolet dealership's parts department. Explain that you lost your key and want to order a replacement. It will usually take the order over the phone, using the VIN, but require you to personally pick up the key.

    • 3

Go to the dealership to pick up your replacement key. Show the cashier your title or registration and your picture identification. A dealership is not allowed to give you a key unless you prove ownership of the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a copy of your registration and insurance in a safe place at home in case of emergency or theft.

  • Locksmiths specializing in automotive keys may have replacements.

  • Not all locksmiths can program the transponder key.
