How to Get a Domain Name From an IP

Each website, server or computer in the Internet has a dual identification. First of all, it is a domain name or host name--www.yahoo.com, for example. It also has an IP (Internet Protocol) address--a numeric value usually written in the dot-decimal format (for instance, 193.33.4.255) that represents the other way to identify a website or computer. A special Internet service called DNS (Domain Name System) converts IP addresses into domain names. Use a special network command ("nslookup") readily available in each Windows version to make a DNS request and figure out the domain name based on the IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" in Windows and type "cmd" in the "Search" field (In Windows Vista/7) or "Run" (if you still use Windows XP). Press "Enter" to open the command prompt window.

    • 2

Type the command "nslookup IP_address" (for example: nslookup_200.200.281.1) in the Windows command prompt window.

    • 3

Read the name of the domain in the line "Name" of the command output.
