How to Upgrade the Memory for a Toshiba Notebook

Toshiba notebooks are designed so that a user can upgrade the memory without taking to a specialist. The most difficult part of upgrading is choosing the right memory for your particular Toshiba notebook, whether it's a Satellite Pro, Magnia, or one of the more than a dozen other models of Toshiba laptops. Fortunately though, once you've found the right memory and bought it, installing it in the notebook takes just a few minutes. Afterward, you should notice a marked difference in the performance of your Toshiba notebook.

Instructions

    • 1

Check Toshiba's data spec sheet for your laptop model to see the maximum upgradable memory as well as the kind of memory your Toshiba model accepts. Click the "Download" button on Toshiba's support website and enter in your model and model number and download the spec sheet to view it. See Resources, below.

    • 2

Turn off your computer after your new memory stick arrives or you have bought it. Turn the computer over so the bottom of the notebook is facing you.

    • 3

Remove the battery to ensure no shocks while you're working under the hood of your Toshiba notebook. Take out the battery by depressing and pulling the switch that holds the battery in place.

    • 4

Remove the screws--usually two--that hold the cover over the memory slots on the bottom of the computer. Put these screws nearby. Use a small piece of tape to keep them together.

    • 5

Touch your metal screwdriver with your fingers before opening the cover to ensure that there's no buildup of static electricity in your hands, which could damage your electrical equipment. Open the cover and place it nearby.

    • 6

Cut open the packaging of your new memory card. Do not open this beforehand since it can accumulate static electricity outside of the package. Touch something metallic again. Lift the memory card slot to about a 30-degree angle and orient the memory card so that the golden bars slide into the memory slot sticking out from the motherboard.

    • 7

Firmly push the memory card into the slot until it cannot go in any farther. Do not jab it in but instead use both hands to push it evenly into the slot. Evenly press the card slot down against the motherboard so that the metal wings beside the card slot can hold the card in place. Reattach the memory card cover, screws and battery to your Toshiba and turn it back on.
