How to Copy an iPod to a Computer With a Wizard
An iPod contains your music once you have synced it with the iTunes program on the computer. Apple does not allow, however, for you to copy music off the iPod and onto a computer. To copy music from the iPod onto a Mac or PC computer, use an iPod Utility that provides a "Wizard." The Wizard is a series of screens that take you through the steps needed to transfer the music from the iPod without having to read a manual or press a lot of buttons. There are a number of iPod utilities that are free or free to use on a trail basis and which will provide a Wizard to help you copy the music from the iPod to the computer.

Download an iPod Utility program that has a "Wizard" integrated into it to the desktop, for example, the free trial version of iPod Computer Wizard for the Mac or the free trial version of CopyToy for a PC (see Resources). Double-click on the file once downloaded. Follow the menu commands to install the program onto the computer's hard drive. Restart a PC after the installation is completed.

Connect the iPod connector on the iPod cable to the iPod. Connect the USB end of the iPod cable to a USB port on the computer.

Launch the iPod Utility program by double-clicking its icon inside of the "Applications" folder if on a Mac, or by selecting it from the "start," "All Applications" pop-up menu.

Click on the icon of the iPod that is in the left column of the iPod Utility program. Click the "Transfer" button at the top of the iPod Utility program's main screen.

Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" menu at the middle of the screen that appears. Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the screen.

Click the "Start" or "Go" button on the next screen. Wait for the confirmation window to appear that states that the song has been copied to the desktop. Close the confirmation window by clicking on the "Done" button. Select the song you want to copy from the iPod from the list presented in the window that appears. Click the "Next" button.

Quit the iPod Utility program. Drag the icon of the iPod on the desktop to the Trash if on a Mac or select "Eject' from the pop-up menu by right-clicking on the iPod icon if on a PC. Remove the iPod cable from the iPod and from the USB port of the computer.
