How to Speed Up a BT Internet Connection

In the United Kingdom broadband provider BT offers a maximum speed of up to 20Mb per second. However 20Mb speed is not a guarantee and there are a number of factors that can cause a drop in broadband speed. These factors include the distance between you and your local exchange doing ongoing repairs in your area. Internet congestion is also another cause of slow and unresponsive Internet. Before undertaking the following steps it is advisable to contact BT and check what speed you should be getting.

Steps To Speeding Up Your BT Broadband

1. Check that your BT router/modem has the latest drivers installed.

2. Open a web browser such as internet explorer and into the address bar type in either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254. Make a note of your line speed or connection speed.

3. Find all microfilters and phone devices around your house. Unplug each one and check that there is no exterior damage. Once removed plug back into the phone socket and ensuring that they are firmly in place.

4. Turn off your router and wait 30 seconds before turning it back on. Allow the router to fully reboot and check your line speed (Step 2) to see if there has been any increase.

5. Check that there is no faulty wiring. A lose connection in your master socket can be a common reason for interference leading to a drop in broadband speed.

6. Ensure that your phone line is working. Make a test call to BT and check that their are no problems in your area.
