Brainstorm specific ideas about what you will sell online. Why should customers come to you instead of going down the street to a chain or local store? What can you offer them that they can't get elsewhere, and for cheaper? Find a niche. Make sure you'll be able to give your clients a personal experience, despite not being able to conduct the transaction face-to-face.

Work with a professional to design a stellar website. Dani Babb, of Entrepreneur.com, says to collaborate with a local designer so that communicating your ideas is clearer and easier. Babb also emphasizes that the designer you choose should have a solid grasp of user experience. "Logos are less important than usability," Babb says.

Set up payment systems through merchant accounts or PayPal. Merchant accounts are set up through banks, and they can be costly at the startup of your business and may be something you consider once orders are rolling in with regularity. Online payment services have become a safe and dependable option, but often for a fee. Decide which one works best for you. Even though one is cheaper, another one may be more efficient or provide better customer service.

Network with community message boards and websites that have similar niches. Become active in an online community, but be sure not to create posts that sound like advertisements. Instead, position yourself as an expert in the field so that people trust your opinion and taste. Many times, after you reach a certain number of posts, message boards will allow you to post a link in your signature. At that point, you can include a link to your website, and when you respond to someone's message they may be inclined to click on over to your store!
