Change your computer's desktop background from generic to custom.

Your computer's desktop is something that you and other people will probably end up looking at every day, so personalizing it with a background that you like is something you may want to do. It's easy to change the background, and you can use a photo you took, a tiled pattern or even just a solid color. You can download a free wallpaper from many sources on the Internet and use a few simple steps to set it.

Instructions

  1. Microsoft Windows

    • 1

Right click your mouse while hovering over your desktop and select "Personalize" from the menu that pops up. You can also go to your Start menu and click on "Control Panel" and then "Personalization."

    • 2

Click on the "Desktop Background" link in the "Control Panel" > "Personalization" window. Click on the arrow in the "Location" menu and navigate to the folder where the image is that you want to use as your new background.

    • 3

Click once on the image after you find it. Choose the option for how you want your picture to be positioned (stretched, tiled or centered). If the background image is smaller than your screen resolution and you stretch it, it will look slightly warped. If you center it, choose a background color that will frame it nicely (click "Change background color"). Hit "OK."

    Mac

Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences." When the System Preferences window opens, click on the button that says "Desktop & Screen Saver."

    • 5

Select the "Desktop" tab near the top of the window and choose a background from the "Apple Images" in the box on the left. Choose your own photos to use as a background image by clicking on the arrow to navigate through the files on your computer.

Click on the image file once when you find it and hit the "Choose" button near the bottom-left of the window. Select the positioning of your image from "Fit to screen," "Tile" or "Center," depending on how big your image is.
