How to Add 2 Subwoofers to 7.1

How to Add 2 Subwoofers to 7.1 thumbnail
Connect two subwoofers to the home theater system with an audio cable adapter.

A 7.1 home theater speaker system consists of seven speakers plus a subwoofer connected to a surround sound receiver. When the system just doesn't pump out enough bass to satisfy, it's possible to connect two powered subwoofers even if the surround sound receiver has a single output jack for only one subwoofer. A simple audio Y adapter with three standard phono jacks can be used to divide the bass signal from the receiver to the connected subs. Since the subwoofers contain their own amplifiers, there are no extra power demands on the receiver, which simply supplies the bass signal.

Things You'll Need

  • Three subwoofer cables
  • Y adapter (available at stereo and electronics stores)

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one subwoofer cable from the Sub OUT jack on the back of the surround sound receiver to the input jack on the Y adapter. Of the three jacks on the Y adapter, use the one labeled "IN" or the jack that has an arrow pointing toward the other two jacks, indicating the audio signal direction.

Connect the other two subwoofer cables from each of the two audio jacks on the Y adapter to the rear input jack on the back of each sub. The plugs on the cable ends push straight into the jacks until they seat with a click sound.

    • 3

Plug the power cord for each sub into an electrical outlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connect the audio cables before plugging the subs into the electricity. This prevents a sudden power surge that could damage the speaker cones inside the sub or harm the built-in amplifiers.
