How to Paint a Playroom Wall Mural

How to Paint a Playroom Wall Mural thumbnail
It is easy to paint a mural on your children's playroom wall.

Playrooms should be exciting places for children to hang out, but plain boring white walls can take all the fun away. Spice up the playroom walls with a mural. You can hire someone to do it for you, but it can also become a family project to undertake. Depending on the size of the mural, it can take anywhere from a day to a long weekend to complete. Ask your children what type of mural they would like on the wall and get started painting it. If you can't draw, don't worry. Simply use a projector to trace the design onto the wall, then just paint inside the lines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the image that you want to put on the wall. You can draw it directly onto the transparency with the permanent marker if you are good at that or print an image from your computer.

    • 2

Lay the transparency on the overhead projector and position it so that it throws the image on the wall in the place you want it.

    • 3

Trace the image on the wall with a pencil.

    • 4

Lay plastic sheeting on the floor to protect it from any dripping paint.

    • 5

Cover the floorboards and ceiling edges with painter's tape to protect them from paint.

    • 6

Use the interior latext paint and larger brushes for large areas that need to be painted, like the background colors.

    • 7

Paint with the craft paint and smaller brushes for the more detailed work.

    • 8

Allow to dry before touching or moving furniture near the mural.

Tips & Warnings

  • Borrow an overhead projector from a local school or rent one online.

  • Move the overhead projector closer or farther from the wall to adjust the size of the outline on the wall.

  • Use painter's tape to help paint long straight lines.

  • If you are not very artistic, try to use more two dimensional shapes, so that you do not have to do a lot of shading with the paints.

  • If you would rather not draw on the wall, trace the pattern onto poster board and cut it out to make a stencil. You can then paint within the stencil with brushes or sponges.
