Pearl paint is very similar to a glaze. It has some pigment to it instead of being completely clear. When it comes to this top coat, you will want to use a good quality brush that will leave the paint looking smooth. The paint may require two coats so that you can be sure to fill in any gaps. Instructions

    • 1

Mark off where you want your pearl paint to go. Tape any sections where you will want to prevent the pearl paint from touching. Tape in the corners where the ceiling meets the wall. Tape over the tops of the floorboards, windows, crown molding or wainscoting.

    • 2

Cover everything you do not want to ruin with a drop cloth. Move furniture out of the room or into the middle of the room so that you can work comfortably.

    • 3

Pour a small to medium amount of pearl paint into a paint tray. Dip a 4-inch color wash style brush into the paint.

    • 4

Wipe off the tip of the brush by gently scraping it against the edge of the paint tray. Let the excess paint run back into the tray, so you will not waste paint or get drips on your wall.

    • 5

Make smooth, slow and broad paint strokes and work in sections. Move from left to right or top to bottom as you work.

    • 6

Add another coat of pearl paint for best results. It will look good with one coat, but two coats will look even better.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use a clean trowel to create a swirly texture after you apply the pearl paint. Use it in sections. Clean the trowel before starting on a new section. Be sure to put on some old clothes while you work. Wear an old hat so you do not get paint in your hair.

  • If you will be doing an entire room with a color wash brush, set aside at least two days for this project. If you are doing a small section of the wall then you will only need about one day to do the work.

  • Use caution when cleaning your paint brush after you are finished. Paint remover is a strong chemical and should be used in a well-ventilated area. If you start to feel dizzy take a break from cleaning. If it is not too hot outside, consider cleaning your brushes next to an outdoor faucet. Keep this chemical away from children at all times.
