How to Troubleshoot the LAN Connection for a Toshiba Laptop
The local area network (LAN) is a cable-based Internet connection, typically using an Ethernet cable to hook up at least one computer to a cable/DSL modem. This Internet connection provides superior speeds to dial-up. However, if your Toshiba laptop computer is not functioning properly with the connection, and the system is not connecting to the Internet, you need to troubleshoot the connection to determine what is causing the issue.

1
Check the cable connection running from the laptop to the DSL/cable modem. If the the cable is not inserted completely into both ports, the data transfer is not going to reach either the computer or the modem (for uploads and downloads).
-
2
Power on the DSL/cable modem. With the modem powered off, the Toshiba laptop is unable to connect to the Internet.
-
-
3
Look over the actual cable or any cuts or damaged areas. If the cable is damaged in any way, the LAN signal is not going to reach the Toshiba laptop.
-
4
Contact your Internet provider. The company may have not received a recent payment, in which case the company is just going to stop your Internet connection until the payment is received.
-
5
Check the network connections on your computer to make sure the LAN connection is selected. Click "Start," then choose "Control Panel." Once the Control Panel loads, select "Network and Internet," then "Network and Sharing Center" and finally "Manage network connections." Once in, choose "Properties" and it should state the LAN connection you are using. If not, select the LAN connection from the available connections and click "Apply" to approve the changes.
