DIY: Wedding Scrolls

DIY: Wedding Scrolls thumbnail
Send your wedding invitations in the way of a scroll inside of a bottle for an unexpected twist to your beach themed wedding.

Taking on do-it-yourself projects for your wedding can ultimately save you money and allow you to inject your personality and style into your wedding more than any product readily available to the masses. Create your own scrolls to use as announcements, invitations, programs or any other wedding stationery you see fit. Scrolls fit in with numerous themes and styles, as they can be simple, romantic or even create a nostalgic mood of yesteryear.

Instructions

    • 1

Stain plain paper with tea bags or burn the edges of the paper with a lighter to make your scrolls feel and look older. This is not necessary if you're using fancy paper or linen. Practice on a few pages before attempting this on all of your scrolls. Allow stained pages to dry fully before writing or printing on them.

    • 2

Write or print your message on the paper. Hand-write the message if you have a small guest list--or hire a calligrapher--for a more personal feel. Use a fancy calligraphy font if you use a computer. Mix in appropriate wording to complement the theme of your wedding. For example, use "Hear Ye" for a medieval wedding or "prince" and "princess" before your names for a fairytale themed wedding. Leave blank space around the words for decorative embellishments, if desired.

    • 3

Affix decorative caps with glue to the ends of the dowels or wooden sticks--which need to be at least 1 or 2 inches wider than your paper--if you want to use wooden dowels for a double-scroll design. Generously cover the top and bottom portions of the paper with glue and roll the edges around the dowels (one on top and one on bottom). Roll the paper around the wood a couple times and pin it in place with clothespins.

    • 4

Roll the paper into a scroll and hold it in place by tying ribbon, twine, raffia or another material that complements your wedding theme. Cut the ribbon to size, leaving enough ribbon to tie a bow if you want.

    • 5

Seal the scroll with a wax seal or stickers made to look like wax seals if you want an authentic old world look. Wax seals and stickers can be custom-designed to have a symbol, monogram or other personalized image.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place scrolled programs or menus in an attractive basket on a table if you want guests to take one upon arriving at your wedding, or ask your ushers to pass them out.

  • Mail scrolled invitations inside bottles, mailing tubes or padded envelopes or hand-deliver them. Scrolled invitations will likely require extra postage. Ask your post office for mailing options and instructions.
