How to Put Patches on a Cub Scout Shirt

How to Put Patches on a Cub Scout Shirt thumbnail
The Boy Scout World Crest, seen on this flag, is worn on a patch above the left pocket on a Cub Scout uniform shirt.

The Boy Scouts believe that wearing a uniform helps boys show they belong to a great group and gives them a opportunity to showcase their personal and pack achievements. While there are four different Cub Scout ranks--Tiger Cub, Wolf Cub Scout, Bear Cub Scout and Webelos Scout--they all share the same basic uniform, with color variations only on the neckerchief and socks. The navy blue uniform shirt is where Cub Scouts can display their rank, awards, medals and other special recognitions.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a copy of the Cub Scout Uniform Inspection Sheet or Patch Placement Guide from your local Cub Scout council. You can also download a copy for free at the Boys Scouts of America's official website (see References).

    • 2

Decide how you are going to attach the patches to the shirt. You can sew them on with a sewing machine, sew them by hand or iron them on. Consider how easy it will be to move patches later when your child outgrows or damages his shirt.

    • 3

Wash and dry the uniform shirt at least once so that it will not shrink after you have attached the patches.

    • 4

Lay the uniform shirt on a flat, hard surface. Make sure the shirt is ironed or pressed so the patches can be arranged as neatly as possible.

    • 5

Without attaching them, simply place all of the patches on the shirt in the correct place according to the uniform guide. Once they are all down, rearrange them so that they are centered, straight and properly spaced.

    • 6

Using straight pins, secure the patches to the shirt so they don't move while you are working on permanently attaching each section.

    • 7

Sew or iron the patches to the shirt one at a time, starting from the top and working your way down. After you attach each patch, check the alignment and placement of the surrounding patches before fastening the next one.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are sewing the patches on, you can save money by using invisible thread that will match every color patch.

  • If you are ironing the patches on, use the steam setting on your iron. If your patches don't have iron-on adhesive already attached, you can use bonding tape purchased from a local craft or fabric store.

  • Check the patches every time you launder the shirt to make sure they are all still attached. Secure any loose sides or edges with bonding tape or a few stitches.
