How to Repair the Ignition Key for a 2001 Saturn

The keys to the 2001 Saturn are made of soft brass and can wear out over time. As the teeth on the key grind down, the key may no longer work in your ignition, doors or trunk. There's really nothing that can be done to repair the key except to get a new one. Go to your local General Motors dealership to get a new key cut for you for a price that is much lower than what a locksmith would charge.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your car title to the local General Motors dealership. The VIN (vehicle identification number) on your title has information about your 2001 Saturn that is stored in the dealer's computer, including the key pattern for the car.

Go to the parts department of the dealership and ask for a new key. You'll need to show your car title to demonstrate proof of ownership. You'll also need to show your driver's license for identification. The employee can enter the VIN into a computer and identify the configuration needed for the new key.

Wait a few minutes while the new key is being cut. After the key has been made, be sure to try it in the ignition, doors and trunk to make sure it fits properly. There is a chance that if the key was worn down, the tumblers in the ignition cylinder may be worn out and require a new cylinder.
