How to Measure Windows for Faux Wood Shutters thumbnail
Measure your windows for new faux wood shutters.

Faux wood shutters provide maximum privacy without compromising style. Depending on the manufacturer, you can order faux wood shutters in a range of pre-finished colors or have yours painted to match any swatch that you provide. Shutters are set in a frame that fits snugly over your existing window and are mounted to the wall. They can also be ordered to mount directly to the existing window frame. The most important part in getting a good fit for your faux wood shutters is proper measurement. Older homes tend to have irregular window shapes, making it important to measure every side of the window. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start at the top left corner of the window. Measure the top of the window from the outside of the frame to the opposite side. If you are choosing outside mount, include any window casing or other trim in your measurement. For inside mount, measure the window from one side of the glass to the other. Write this number down.

    • 2

Measure the right side of the window from the top right corner of the window to the lower right corner of the window. Include all trim in the measurement as necessary for inside or outside mount. Write the measurement down on paper.

    • 3

Repeat the process for the bottom of the window and the left side of the window.

    • 4

Draw a sketch of the window. Indicate each measurement on the sketch.

    • 5

Measure the window again using the same process. Double-check your measurements for accuracy.

    • 6

Repeat the process for other windows where faux wood shutters will be installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a couple of inches to the measurement if the frame of the window is large. Adding more space to the shutters will make the windows look larger and more impressive. Make sure that you won't be able to see any wall through the open shutters.
