How to Copy a Video From a DVR to a PC
If you often record TV shows on your DVR, you know that they take up a lot of space on the DVR's hard drive. Transferring the recorded shows to your PC can not only save the DVR’s space but also allow you to retain a permanent copy. Also, you can burn them to disks for archiving.
Things You'll Need
- PC with a video capture card
- Video capturing software
- Audio-video cables
- DVR

Connect the DVR to the PC using audio-video cables. If you use composite cables, make sure you plug the yellow cable into the “video out” jack of the DVR. The red and white plugs should be plugged into the right and left “audio out” jacks.
Similarly, connect the other ends to the colored jacks on the PC’s video card. The video card should be located on the back of the CPU (central processing unit). -

Launch a video recording software application on your PC, such as Debut Video Capture, Pinnacle or Video Express. When you open the software, specify the video card as the recording source.

Use the up and down arrow keys on the DVR’s remote and scroll through the menu to select the video you want to copy.

Press the "Play" button on the DVR.

Click on the "Record" button on your PC’s video capturing software. Now the video will play on the DVR and your PC will record it. You can click the “Stop” button when the video has stopped playing.

Go to “File” and select “Save as.” Give the file a name and save it somewhere. This will be the copied video file from your DVR.
