How to Set Up a Home LAN With a D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router
D-Link is a popular maker of home networking equipment. Their products allow consumers to quickly and easily set up home networks. D-Link broadband routers are user-friendly and intuitive to install, while providing sufficient security and reliability for most home networking needs. Setting up a local area network (LAN) with a D-Link Ethernet broadband router is a relatively simple task.
Instructions

1
Connect the D-Link router to the broadband connection. For both cable and DSL modems, connect the Ethernet cable from the modem into the WAN port in the back of the D-Link router.
-
2
Connect any wired computers to the router by plugging the Ethernet cables from the computers into one of the Ethernet ports on the router.
-
-
3
Configure the connection type from the router's web-based configuration page (see reference 1). Reference the router's user manual for instructions about logging on to the configuration page. For a cable modem, ensure that the WAN settings on the WAN page are set to "Dynamic IP Address". For a DSL connection, enter the user name and password supplied by your Internet service provider into the "PPPoE" option field (see reference 2). Click "Apply" and "Continue" to save the changes.
-
4
Apply wireless network settings to any wireless computers and devices on the network. From the Wireless settings of the router's configuration page, locate the name of the wireless network. This is the network name to use when connecting the wireless devices.

Tips & Warnings
By default, most broadband routers do not use any wireless security configuration out of the box. It is wise to enable WPA or WEP security on a newly setup wireless network. This prevents intruders from accessing the wireless network.
