Learn how to buy a website address.

There are two distinct ways to buy a website address. The first is to buy a new domain name--one that is not currently in use--to on which to place a new website. The second is to buy an existing website address from someone who already has a website.

Buying a new domain name is generally far less expensive than purchasing one from an existing website owner; however, if you buy an existing website, you will not need to create a website to place at the address.

  1. How to Buy a New Website Address

    • 1

Visit a domain registrar such as GoDaddy, Register.com or HostMonster. You will first have to search to see if your desired domain name (website address) is available; if not, the registrar will offer some suggestions for alternatives, or you may search for a different domain name.

Domain names are generally offered in increments of one year, and some registrars offer discounts for multiple years, or if you purchase other products or multiple website addresses.

This step requires a valid credit card or PayPal account.

    • 2

Purchase a hosting plan. This is available from most registrars, and makes your website visible on the Internet once you upload files.

    • 3

Design your website. Use web-development software such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Notepad++ or NetBeans (the latter two are free software packages).

    • 4

Upload your website using an FTP client such as the free Filezilla. This will make your website visible to anyone with an Internet connection and Web browser.

How to Buy an Existing Website Address

    • 5

Determine the owner of the website by accessing the Whois database. Visit register.com and click on "Whois Lookup," enter the website address and fill out the verification code in the box to tell register.com you are human.

    • 6

Contact the administrative contact and negotiate a purchase price. Once you have finished negotiating a purchase contract, the original owner of the website will have to initiate a change of ownership through her registrar.

    • 7

Accept the website address. After you have done this, the website is yours; you can leave it as it is, make minor changes or undertake a complete redesign of the website.
