How to Replace the Chain on Poulan Chainsaws
A Poulan chainsaw chain is designed specifically to fit your Poulan chainsaw. Damaged or dull chains can be changed to keep your Poulan chainsaw up and running until the cutting job is complete. Most of the time, it is easier to keep an extra sharpened chain on hand to replace a dull chain, and with an extra chain you'll have less down time. Replacing the chain on your Poulan saw is a fairly easy job that you can do yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1
Place your Poulan chainsaw on a table, with the blade up. Locate the two bolts that hold the chainsaw bar cover on.
-
2
Remove the bolts on the chainsaw bar cover. Use a wrench or the chain-removal socket tool that comes with the chainsaw.
-
-
3
Pull the cover off the side of the chainsaw. Remove the chainsaw bar and the chain.
-
4
Place the chainsaw bar back over the mounting bolts. Make sure it fits on the tension adjustment slider. Align the holes in the bar with the bolts and the slider. The bar will lay flat when it's correctly mounted.
-
5
Loop the new chain over the chainsaw bar and the drive sprocket that sticks out from the side of the engine. The drive links on a chain will fit into a groove on the bar, so thread the chain onto the bar and over the front sprocket until you can pull it smoothly around the bar and sprockets. The cutting teeth will face out and away from the engine when the chain is installed properly.
-
6
Replace the bar cover. Hand tighten the nuts until the cover is secure.
-
7
Insert a screwdriver in the tensioning screw. Turn the screw clockwise. This will slowly tighten the blade. When sufficiently tightened, pull up on the top of the chain and measure the gap between the chain and the bar. The gap should be 1/16 of an inch. Continue to turn the tensioning screw until that gap measurement has been achieved.
-
8
Tighten the bar cover firmly with your wrench or chainsaw tool. When tightened down, pull on the chain so that it revolves smoothly around the bar. It must revolve. If it is jammed for some reason and doesn't revolve smoothly, you'll have to remove the bar cover and determine what the problem is.
-
9
Lubricate the chain with chainsaw oil along its entire length.

Tips & Warnings
Wearing a pair of leather palm gloves will keep your hands safe and also give you better gripping power when pulling on the chain to make it revolve around the bar.
