How to Purchase a DVR for a TV
A digital video recorder, or DVR, is a device that connects to a cable or satellite receiver and gives you the ability to record programming directly onto the system's built-in hard drive. Although most cable and satellite services offer this features (at a monthly cost), it is possible to purchase your own DVR. There are several on the market, and you'll need to consider a few details before settling on a specific device.

1
Look at the price of the DVR. If the digital video recorder is beyond your budget it is best to stay away. No need to go in debt over the device.
-
2
Check to see whether there is a monthly service fee. Some charge a monthly fee to let you record programming. That basically makes it pointless to purchase a DVR, because you can rent one from your cable/satellite company for a comparable price.

3
Look at how the DVR obtains its video programming information. Some just read off information from the satellite/cable receiver. Others require a high-speed Internet connection. If you don't have such a connection it is best to stay away from that type of DVR.
-
4
Check out the product resolution. If you have an HD television and receiver it is a good idea to purchase an HD DVR so you can view your high-definition programming.
-
5
Look at the connection methods the DVR has. Although all TVs have a standard RCA and coaxial cable connection (so any DVR can connect to any TV), you might want to use a higher-quality hookup, such as component or HDMI.
-
6
Compare prices at different stores. You might find the model you want on sale in a store or online. Manufacturers often sell DVRs directly through their own websites, and you might be able to cut out the middleman markup by buying directly from the manufacturer.
-
7
Ask whether the purchase of the DVR comes with any installation service. If you are not comfortable hooking up the DVR with your TV and cable/satellite receiver, installation is a helpful option. Although most locations do offer installation, some charge for it.
