How to Refill a 12A Toner
12a toner cartridges fit many types of HP printers, including the 1018, 1020, 3020 and 3030 models. These cartridges are slightly tricky to refill than unplug and refill or unscrew and refill models, since users need to melt a hole into the plastic casing on the toner. Intrepid or penny-pinching individuals can change their own toner using a toner refill kit designed for the 12a cartridge. Spread out a sheet of newspaper on a table. Refilling toner cartridges can be messy business and this ensures you don't spread toner everywhere.

Remove your toner cartridge from your printer. Place the toner cartridge on the newspaper so the top part (with the label) faces you.

Wipe the outside of the cartridge with a paper towel to remove excess toner.

Place the hole melting tool (included in the toner kit) up to the cartridge face in the right spot. Hold the hole melting tool up to the cartridge until it melts a hole through the cartridge. Then pull your hand away and set the tool down.

Pour the toner in through the hole you just created. Toner Kits advises this should take 10 minutes from the time you begin to melt the hole until you have all toner in the cartridge.

Cut a piece of foil tape (included in the toner kit) to cover the hole you created to fill the toner cartridge. Stick the foil tape over the hole to securely seal the toner cartridge.

Insert the toner cartridge back into your printer and shut the printer door.
