Apply for a passport. You need a valid U.S. passport to be issued a work visa.

Go to the Australian Department of Immigration website at www.immi.gov.au/. Click on the "Visas" tab and a new page will open. Click on the "Workers" tab.

Click on the tab that best describes your employment circumstances. This will open a new page with a downloadable booklet. You can order a hard copy of the booklet which includes the applicable forms from the website for 20 Australian dollars (about $18).

Read the booklet. It contains information regarding requirements for a work visa. Each booklet has a self-assessment test to determine if you qualify for a work visa. Australia has strict immigration policies and only grants visas to skilled workers in certain fields. The booklet gives a good indication of whether you have the qualifying skills, and will be approved or denied a visa.

Apply for a work visa using the online application system or download the application form and mail it. Each type of work visa has a different form. The form needed is listed in the corresponding booklet. All forms can be downloaded from the Australian Department of Immigration website.
