Cure for Acne on a Feline
Sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands in a feline's skin to waterproof the coat and keep the skin soft. Often, when cats get older, they cannot clean themselves as well as they used to and sebum builds up on the skin, particularly around the chin. The result is feline acne, which makes the cat's skin look patchy, crusty and dirty. Feline acne can easily be cured at home; however, a trip to the vet is in order first to ensure the scaly patches on the skin are acne and do not require additional treatment such as antibiotics and corticosteroids.

- Antibacterial soap
- Wash cloth
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Cotton ball
- Topical ointment
- Stainless or glass food dishes

Wash the skin area infected with acne with an antibacterial soap. Moisten a cloth with warm water and place a small amount of soap on the cloth. Gently rub the area in a circular motion, cleaning the skin completely. Rinse thoroughly.

Moisten a cloth or cotton ball with a solution of hydrogen peroxide. Press gently on the acne area and allow the solution to saturate the skin for a moment. Remove the cloth or cotton ball and allow the skin to dry.

Discuss which topical ointment containing both vitamin A and retinoids is most appropriate to use on your cat with your cat's veterinarian. Apply the indicated ointment to the affected area twice daily.

Use shallow stainless steel or glass food and water dishes instead of plastic. Some cats are allergic to the plastic and dyes used in plastic dishes; this may be the underlying cause of the feline acne.

Groom your cat daily by brushing it to aid in the even distribution of skin oils and to remove excess fur and dander.

Always be calm and reassuring when cleaning and treating your feline's acne. Your cat will likely be resistant to the treatments and being forceful will not help. Place the cat on a soft towel to help to reassure it and so it can maintain its footing.
Always consult a veterinarian for any issue your cat may have to obtain professional guidance and necessary medical treatment. In severe cases of feline acne, veterinary treatment is critical in curing the condition.
