Instructions

    • 1

Measure the quilt. Add one inch to both the width and length measurements for the quilt cover front dimensions.

Add 1 inch to the width measurement and 18 inches to the length measurement for the quilt cover back dimensions.

    • 2

Cut the quilt cover front from one sheet, cutting off all existing hems from the sheet. Cut the quilt cover back from the second sheet. Start at, and preserve, the wide top hem on one end. Cut the back in half, into two pieces, across its middle, from side to side.

    • 3

Hem the back half that is missing the wide top hem by folding under a half-inch to the wrong side of the fabric twice, to encase the raw edge, and stitching close to the open edge, side to side, sewing the hem in place.

    • 4

Lay the cover front on a flat surface right side up. Lay the back half with the wide hem on top of the front cover, right sides together, matching the outside edges on the bottom and sides and with the wide hem towards the center. Pin in place. Repeat with the back half previously hemmed. Place right sides together, with all outside raw edges matching, and allowing the hems to overlap in the center, pin in place.

    • 5

Sew a half-inch seam around the entire edge of the quilt cover and remove pins as you approach them with the sewing machine needle. Reinforce the overlapped areas by sewing over those areas a second time, directly on top of the first line of stitching.

    • 6

Clip each corner seam allowance with sharply-tipped scissors, stopping just short of the sewing line. Turn quilt cover right side out. Carefully pick out corners.

    • 7

Place cover on the quilt by slipping it though the lapped back. Straighten lap to close. The eight-inch double-overlap ensures that the cover stays closed without the need for closures. Place the covered quilt on the bed overlap side down.
