How to Print With Vellum

How to Print With Vellum thumbnail
Design text or an image and print it on vellum paper using a low-ink setting.

Vellum is a sheer paper used for making scrapbooks and other crafts. Vellum paper is available in different thicknesses and textures, making it difficult to print on. Choose a smooth texture vellum paper with a solid color for best results during the printing process. Since vellum paper is higher in cost than standard scrapbooking paper, change the printer settings and test the desired printing image or text on regular paper prior to printing on the vellum page.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove one piece of vellum paper from the package and insert it into the printer paper drawer according to the manufacturer's instructions for the printer model.

    • 2

Set the print settings on the printer to "Transparency," as this will use a lower volume of ink to increase drying and prevent smudging. Some printers may use the term economy or speed print to signify a low-ink setting.

    • 3

Press the "Print" button on your computer to start the printing process. Monitor the paper closely to make sure the printer is able to grab it and pull it through.

    • 4

Remove the paper from the printer once the process is complete. Do not touch the printed area, as it will be damp and smudge easily due to the sheen on vellum paper. Place the paper on a flat surface and let it dry for a minimum of 20 minute before using.

    • 5

Print on vellum with a permanent pen instead of a printer. Place the finished paper on a flat surface and let it dry for a minimum of 15 minutes. Fine-tipped pens dry faster than wide-tipped pens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Speed the ink-drying process on vellum paper by holding a hair dryer set to the low setting several inches from the paper. Hold the paper to prevent it from blowing away while drying.

  • Find the low-ink print setting in most printers by pressing the "Menu" button and selecting "Print Options." Consult the printer manual for more information on this setting.
