How to Get Windows Live Messenger to Use Safari
When you activate a hyperlink in Windows Live Messenger, it uses your default program settings to choose a Web browser. Without configuration, Windows uses Internet Explorer as the default Web-access program. Opening your program default settings can change Messenger's browser to Safari, or another browser of your preference. This will change Messenger's browser use, as well as other programs that may open websites or other online documents.

1
Install Safari on your system. Windows can only access installed programs from its list of defaults. You can download Safari installation files from Apple's website (see Resources).
-
2
Click the Start menu, and choose "Default Programs" in Windows Vista or Windows 7. In Windows XP, choose "Set Program Access and Defaults" in the All Programs menu.
-
-
3
Click "Set your default programs" in Windows 7 and Vista. In XP, select "Non-Microsoft" to view a list of installed third-party programs, including Safari.
-
4
Choose Safari from the list of installed programs on the left.
-
5
Click "Set this program as default" to give Safari default access for each variety of Web access, or click "Choose defaults for this program" to give the program default access to only specific types of pages. Windows Live Messenger may use any number of page types to access your browser, so use the first option if you want to ensure it only opens Safari.
-
6
Click "Save" and then "OK" to save your settings and close the window.
-
7
Close Windows Messenger and Safari if they are running. The default access may not take effect until the programs restart. Some access settings may also require your computer to restart before taking effect.
