How to Mail a Flash Drive

How to Mail a Flash Drive thumbnail
A USB flash drive can be mailed more safely than a hard disk drive.

A USB flash drive uses solid-state memory to store data. This gives it an advantage over a hard drive because there are no moving parts that can be damaged if the USB flash drive is jostled or knocked around. However, the USB flash drive can be physically damaged if it is dropped or stepped on. You can mail a USB flash drive using the US Postal Service or a private carrier like UPS, providing that you package the drive safely against being damaged during the transport. The procedure requires an item from an office supply store and a few supplies from around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase, from an office supply store or drugstore, a padded envelope that is approximately double the size of the USB flash drive--you can also use a 5-by-7-inch or 8-by-10-inch padded envelope if the size of the envelope is unimportant to you.

    • 2

Place the padded envelope on a table with the open flap facing to the right. Write your name and address in the upper left corner of the padded envelope with the magic marker. Write the name and address of the person that the USB flash drive is being mailed to in the center of the padded envelope with the magic marker.

    • 3

Place the connector cap onto the connector that is at one end of the USB flash drive. Tape the sides of the connector cap to the USB flash drive with strips of cellophane tape.

    • 4

Place the USB flash drive, connector cap facing down, into the open end of the padded envelope. Close the flap at the top of the padded envelope. Staple the flap closed with the stapler.

    • 5

Take the padded envelope to the Post Office or to the office of a private carrier. Wait as a service representative weighs the padded envelope. Pay for the postage for the padded envelope to be mailed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can insure the contents of your USB flash drive, although this could require paying an extra fee on top of the postage.
